White Cane Safety Day

White Cane Safety Day is an unofficial holiday in the United States, celebrated on October 15 of each year since 1964. The date is set aside to celebrate the achievements of people who are blind or visually impaired and the important symbol of blindness and tool of independence, the white cane. On October 6, 1964 a joint resolution of the U.S. Congress, HR 753, was signed into law as 36 U.S.C. § 142. This resolution authorized the President of the United States to proclaim October 15 of each year as “White Cane Safety Day.” President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the first White Cane Safety Day proclamation within hours of the passage of the joint resolution. White Cane Day remains largely unknown to the general public.

Rowan University Forward to Freedom (RUFF) is a student volunteer organization that raises puppies for The Seeing Eye, Inc., a national nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting independence the and dignity of visually impaired individuals through the use of guide dogs.

Based in Morristown, New Jersey, The Seeing Eye breeds its own German Shepherds, Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers and Lab/Golden crosses for guide work.

Puppies are placed in foster families at just seven and eight weeks of age.  These puppies, destined for a special job, stay with their puppy raisers until they are approximately 16 months of age.  At this time, they return to The Seeing Eye for their formal harness training.

While the puppies are with their volunteer raisers they learn basic obedience commands and experience the world in which they will eventually work.  The campus is the perfect place to raise a guide dog as we are a small city unto ourselves.  The dogs get plenty of exposure to the things they will encounter as guide dogs. These dogs grow up in crowds, around traffic, construction equipment, bicycles, wheelchairs, fire alarms and so much more.

RUFF is in its fifth year on the campus.  Several pups have returned to The Seeing Eye for training from Rowan University.  So far eleven dogs have gone into service.

From Seeing Eye’s Website
http://www.seeingeye.org

The mission of The Seeing Eye is to enhance the independence, dignity, and self-confidence of blind people through the use of Seeing Eye dogs.

The Seeing Eye believes:
Blind persons who seek greater independence will benefit most from a Seeing Eye dog.
Dogs are uniquely capable of increasing the mobility of blind people and enhancing their lives.
The best Seeing Eye dogs are well bred and cared for, socialized, trained, and motivated by a desire to please.

Our students – people who are blind or visually impaired – come from all over the United States and Canada to spend up to a month training with a new Seeing Eye dog. They range in age from 16 to senior citizens, their home environments may be rural or urban, and they may be homemakers, volunteers, or judges. But they all have this in common: They are motivated by a sense of independence and armed with the knowledge that Seeing Eye dogs will provide an extra edge to attain success, however they may choose to define it. Join us in providing those opportunities for success.

The Seeing Eye Celebrates 80 Years!

The Seeing Eye, Inc., pioneers and innovators in dog guide services, is celebrating its 80th anniversary in 2009. The Seeing Eye® provides specially bred and trained dogs to guide people who are blind and visually impaired. Seeing Eye® dog users experience greatly enhanced mobility and independence, allowing them to retain their active lifestyles despite blindness. The school is holding a special graduate reunion in August, expected to attract graduates from across the United States and Canada.

Recently, the Seeing Eye opened a gift shop at 14 Maple Avenue, Morristown, N.J., adjacent to the Seeing Eye’s newly opened Jane H. Booker Student Center. The center is used by students to relax and socialize in between training routes with instructors and their new Seeing Eye dogs. The Seeing Eye is philanthropy and is supported solely by contributions from individuals, corporations and foundations, bequests and other planned gifts. By shopping at this store, you can directly help the Seeing Eye continue its mission. The shop features a wide selection of Seeing Eye merchandise, including fleece jackets, T-shirts, mouse pads, polo shirts, baseball caps, pens, pencils, refrigerator magnets, holiday ornaments and cards. Store hours are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays. You can also shop online and learn more about the Seeing Eye.
