Community & outreach programs > NJLBH Summer Reading

Sponsored by the Little Rock Foundation and the New Jersey Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired.

The 2006 Summer Reading Program was sponsored by NJLBH, a bureau of the New Jersey State Library, in partnership with the Little Rock Foundation and the New Jersey Department of Human Services Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired.  The reading program, planned and organized by NJLBH’s Head of Youth Services Sharon Rawlins, advocates literacy and encourages the love of reading among NJLBH’s young customers who are blind, visually impaired, deaf-blind, reading disabled or who have physical disabilities which prevent them from reading or using standard printed materials.  Participants in the Summer Reading Program were required to read 6 Braille, Large Print, or audio books from animal-themed booklists, divided into five grade categories ranging from pre-school to Young Adult. Readers also wrote a short essay in which they imagined what kind of animal they would be and why they chose that animal. Prizes were raffled off for any participant in the Summer Reading Program who read at least one book.
